Horizon | naumanni-horizon |
Zone | calliphyllum-zone |
Stage | Lower Hettangian |
Description
After the strong nodule stage, numerous, fine but sharp ribs suddenly set in for two turns. They are s-shaped and slightly retroradiate. There are approx. 40 per turn. After that, the ribs become wider and even more distinctly S-shaped.
They begin at the suture, in larger specimens also only at the umbilical edge, and reach the greatest height at the outer third of the winding. They are roof-shaped, with the anterior slope steeper than the posterior.
Remarkable is the progression over the external side: some ribs do not weaken, others do, which gives the external side a humped appearance. In the piece shown here, every second rib is quite regularly weakened.
The cross-section of the coils is almost circular when young, similar to W. waehneri, but later becomes distinctly oval.
* Description according to Lange (1952), supplemented
This rare species has a characteristic ribbing, distinguishing it from all other species in this period.
Compared to Waehneroceras waehneri the navel width is smaller.
