Species | Togaticeras togatum (NEUMAYR) |
Author | NEUMAYR |
Group | Phylloceraten |
Horizon | naumanni-horizon costosum-horizon |
Zone | calliphyllum-zone |
Stage | Lower Hettangian |
Description
The shells are predominantly quite small and narrow-bodied. The winding cross-section is oval, the umbilical wall and umbilical "edge" are formed as a single arch. The flanks are curved. There are up to 10 s-shaped constrictions on the stone core of the inner coils or in smaller specimens. The shell is always smooth (without constrictions) and may have accretion stripes in the shape of the constrictions on larger specimens.
The species is quite rare. The stratigraphic level cannot be determined exactly (in the area between the calliphyllum and naumanni/johnstoni horizons).

Compare
Similar is Togaticeras stella, which may also have constrictions. However, this species differs in having a distinct umbilical edge and fewer constrictions. T. stella also has a less wide winding cross-section.
