Species | Togaticeras stella (SOWERBY) |
Author | SOWERBY |
Group | Phylloceraten |
Horizon | atanatense-horizon |
Zone | marmoreum-zone |
Stage | Upper Hettangian |
Description
The shells are predominantly quite small and evolute. The cross-section of the coils is oval, the umbilical edge very distinct and the flanks flattened. Proradiate constrictions may be present on the stone core of the inner coils or in smaller specimens. The shell is always smooth (without constrictions).
The species is partly very common and occurs together with Geyeroceras cylindricum in the first limestone bank of the Adnet Fm. (Lienbacher Member) above the marmoreum crust. Possibly it extends even further up. For the time being, a cylindricum ammonite horizon is used as level.
* Description according to Rakus (1993), supplemented
Compare
Similar is Togaticeras togatum, which also has constrictions. However, this species differs in having a broadly rounded umbilical drop and more numerous constrictions. T. togatum occurs stratigraphically much earlier.
