Description

The body is evolute, the flanks of the inner coils are slightly convex, those of the outer ones are flattened. The umbilical drop is very low.
A distinct nodule stage is formed on the innermost 1-2 coils. This is followed by a nearly smooth turn, whereupon radiate to recurved ribs appear. The number and height of these ribs is quite variable, but generally they are weak and numerous. After one or two more coils, the body becomes almost smooth. Indistinct, narrow or wide s-shaped ribs may appear on the living chamber. They are strongest at the point of bending near the external side, where they then disappear. The lobe line is strongly branched. The suspensory lobes are strongly recurved. Compare

Most similar to P. calliphyllum is P. strongolum. P. calliphyllum shows less strong ribs, which are also less recurved. In addition, the cross-section of the coils is not as wide and the body is more flattened. The microconch of P. strongolum and P. calliphyllum are very similar and cannot really be distinguished yet. P. calliphyllum occurs en masse near the base of the "Calliphyllum bed", partly together and above Ps. strongolum.
