Description
The winding cross-section is oval, the flanks are rounded and fall away quite quickly to the vertical umbilicus without an umbilical edge.
Although the width of the windings is not particularly large, the enclosures have a typically "thick" appearance due to the rounded flanks.
In good condition, fine, numerous radial stripes/ribs are visible on the shell. Canavari gives four stripes per mm.
* Description according to Canavari (1882), supplemented
Compare
Nevadaphyllites glaberrimus (which occurs much earlier) is less thick, Geyeroceras cylindricum has clearly flattened flanks. The fine ribbing clearly distinguishes Ph. occiduale from all other forms.
