Species | Alpinoceras salinarius (HAUER) |
Author | HAUER |
Group | Alsatiten/Alpinoceraten |
Horizon | seebachi-horizon |
Zone | megastoma-Zone |
Stage | Middle Hettangian |
Description
The cross-section of the windings is extremely broad oval, the flanks are broadly rounded, the outer side appears flattened. The greatest width of the coils is near the navel. A distinct keel is developed, with shallow and broad furrows. The ribs are more or less bulging on the innermost coils, but become increasingly flattened. They start strongly retroradiate at the suture, cross the flank still slightly retroradiate in a wide arc and end strongly curved forward at the furrows. This rib formation in adult specimens is reminiscent of that of Alsatites proaries. A. salinarius is very rare and occurs in the transitional middle/upper Hettangian, similar to Alpinoceras haueri.

Compare
Alpinoceras salinarius can be clearly distinguished from other alpinocerates by its large winding width and the evenly curved course of its ribs. Schreinbachites retroversicostatus is somewhat similar in cross-section, but has a stronger keel and irregular ribbing.
