Description

The casings are very evolute. The WQ is oval, almost round. From the suture the convex flanks rise, reach their greatest height in the middle and drop again to the external side. The external side has a raised, strong keel with distinct, deeply depressed furrows. The keel is already clearly developed in very small specimens. Due to the tight curvature between the flank and the furrows, secondary keels can be observed in some specimens. This is particularly evident in very large or somewhat compressed shells.
The ribbing begins on the innermost coils as a knot, which passes into a stage of strong, little curved ribs. As the size increases, the typical sculpture develops: the ribs begin at the suture strongly inclined backwards and run in a wide arc over the flank, where they merge into the secondary keels very strongly inclined forwards. The rib pattern on the flanks is strikingly similar to that of Alsatites proaries.
Alpinoceras haueri is a common and also large form, which is also very variable in terms of rib height, number and the expression of the keel furrows. Wähner describes the species in great detail and additionally delimits a variety "altior", which has higher coils and a narrower navel. For the sake of simplicity, we do not adopt this delimitation at the moment.
Alpinoceras haueri occurs in the uppermost megastoma zone, together with A. seebachi and other alpinocerats. As Wähner has already noticed, you find specimens together with A. marmoreum, which have certainly not been relocated.

Compare

The strong keel with deep furrows and the strongly forward-curved ribs make this species unmistakable.
A. salinarius is somewhat similarly ribbed, but has much thicker coils.
